TRAVEL UPDATE: BA flight disruption continues at Heathrow

TRAVEL UPDATE: BA flight disruption continues at Heathrow
Updated 29 May 2017
British Airways (BA) passengers are facing a third day of disruption at Heathrow Airport as the airline deals with the impact of a worldwide computer system crash, BBC reports.
BA says it aims to operate a full long-haul schedule and a "high proportion" of short-haul services after the outage caused by a power failure.
So far today, 13 short-haul flights at Heathrow have been cancelled.
Cancellations and delays affected thousands of passengers at both Heathrow and Gatwick on Saturday. All flights operated from Gatwick on Sunday but more than a third of services from Heathrow - mostly to short-haul destinations - were cancelled.
In a statement, BA said its IT systems were moving "closer to full operational capacity”.
Customers displaced by flight cancellations can claim up to £200 a day for a room (based on two people sharing), £50 for transport between the hotel and airport, and £25 a day per adult for meals and refreshments.
BA said Heathrow was still expected to be congested today and urged travellers not to go to the airport unless they had a confirmed booking for a flight that was operating.
It said passengers could get a full refund or rebook to travel up to the end of November but recommend they use its website.
Thousands of bags remain at Heathrow Airport, but BA has advised passengers not to return to collect them, saying they will be couriered to customers.

TRAVEL ALERT: Mass airport delays expected this weekend. San Francisco

TRAVEL ALERT: Mass airport delays expected this weekend
Updated 23 May 2017

Major flight delays and numerous cancellations are expected at San Francisco International Airport this weekend

Maintenance work needs to be completed on the airport’s tarmac before the summer rush.

A $35-million repaving project scheduled for weekends this spring was supposed to be put on hold this Saturday and Sunday to accommodate the upcoming Memorial Day travel. However, after the work fell behind, officials decided they could not afford to take the weekend off.

Flight delays are expected to average 30 to 90 minutes between the start of work at 22h00 on Friday and the end of the job at roughly 16h00 on Monday.

The delays and cancellations, airport officials said, will compare to the disruption caused by a winter storm. Travelers are advised to keep in close touch with their carriers.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Travel Consultant?

With the dozens of online travel sites and the ability to book directly with almost any airline, hotel or other travel service, it would seem that travel agents might go the way of the dinosaurs. The American Society of Travel Agents, though, reports travel agents sell 85 percent of all cruises and 70 percent of all packages and tours, as of 2008. Agents are still in demand, and offer plenty of benefits when you are booking your vacation.

Time and Money Savings

Sometimes, spending hours on the computer searching for the best travel deals gets you results -- and other times, it just leads to frustration. When you work with a travel agent, she does that legwork, searching out the travel options that best meet your needs and budget. In most cases, travel agents have access to information about rates and routes that average consumer might not have, saving you time and money, even when you consider the agent's fee. Using a travel agent can also help you score a great deal on a package or promotion. Agents generally receive information and access to promotions from resorts, cruise lines and other travel providers that aren't available to the general public.

Travel Assistance

You're en route to a Caribbean cruise a when a snowstorm in Detroit delays your flight in Philadelphia. If you booked your travel through an agent, you can call him to get assistance with rebooking your travel arrangements. When you book through an online travel site, you might not be able to get that level of personalized attention, or you could have trouble finding someone who can help you get where you need to be. If something goes wrong when you arrive at your destination, such as your room is unacceptable or the transportation to the resort never shows up, your travel agent can usually resolve those problems.

Travel Recommendations

Perhaps you've always wanted to take a cruise, but you're not sure which cruise line is best for you or where you want to go. Maybe you want to take the kids to Disney World, but you're having trouble navigating the endless array of ticket and package options. A travel agent can help. Many travel agents specialize in a particular type of travel, such as cruises, Disney or Europe, and are able to make recommendations and help you plan a trip that meets your needs and budget. Their inside knowledge helps you avoid wasting time and money on the things you're not interested in, and lets you focus instead on taking the trip.

Perks

Travel agents who book a high volume of trips often have access to perks that you might not be able to get on your own. Whether it's a room upgrade, a fee waiver or even reservations at a hot resort or on a popular tour, travel agents often add perks into your vacation plan. If you are planning a trip for a special occasion, such as a marriage proposal, a travel agent has access to the resources and people who can help you plan the perfect event.

Search for last escaped lion continues
Updated 10 May 2017

Visitors in and around the Kruger National Park are being advised to be on the lookout for the last of five escaped lions, News24 reports. The search is on for the last lion, after five escaped lions were spotted on the N4 / Mananga Road crossing in Komatipoort on Monday, May 8. By yesterday evening, SANParks confirmed that four of the male lions, believed to have been forced out by a larger pride of lions, were successfully darted and returned to Park - with one still at large.

Malaria cases on the rise
Updated 10 May 2017 @ 09:51

There has been an increase in South African malaria cases over the past few weeks, according to eTNW. The South African National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says that between 2016 and 2017, 9 478 cases have been reported, of which 5 177 were imported cases and 76 reported deaths. Limpopo has seen a high number this period, with 1 648 cases and three deaths. Neighbouring countries have seen a similar trend due to similar weather patterns to South Africa’s. Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi have seen significant malaria transmission, while parts of Botswana and Namibia have reported more cases. The NICD has advised travellers to consult their doctors for anti-malarial chemoprophylaxis, even though it is not 100% effective. Whether travellers are visiting low- or high-risk areas, they are advised to be aware of malaria symptoms such as fever, chills, sweats, headaches, nausea and vomiting, body aches, general malaise and yellow discolouration of eyes or skin.

Meningitis outbreak kills over 140 in Nigeria

An outbreak of meningitis has killed at least 140 people in several states of Nigeria, BBC claims.

It has been reported over the last week in six states and has so far infected more than 1,000 people.

While major cities have not yet been affected, travellers may want to receive a meningitis vaccination before heading to Nigeria.
